Hot Tubs for Improved Mental Health, Reduced Stress, Anxiety and Depression
There are many benefits of owning a hot tub – it relaxes tired muscles, it aids in family dynamics (improving family time), if you have one in your garden it’s easy to just pop into your tub and wallow and it helps you sleep.
Another essential benefit for using a hot tub is that it improves mental health in a variety of ways.
Helps with loneliness
Scientific research at Yale University carried out a study whether people might use physical warmth as a way to feel better about themselves. Personal habits included when showers were taken and how the people felt before they took a shower e.g. for example, felt starved for company or unhappy having nobody to talk to.
When the data was compiled by the researchers, a strong connection was found between loneliness and the frequency of bathing. The lonelier someone was the longer the shower or bath was. It seems that people tend to substitute physical warmth for missing social warmth in their lives.
Releases Feel Good Hormones
In an article published on PsychologyToday.com, Peter Bongiorno, ND, LAc explains that bathing can even lead to chemical changes in the brain.
He writes: “Decreases in stress hormones (like cortisol) have been reported with water bathing. It has also been shown that water bathing may also help the balance of the feel good neurotransmitter, serotonin.”
Helps Alleviate Stress and Anxiety
If you’ve had a hard day at work and the thought of jumping into a nice hot bath fills you with lots of ‘ahhhh’ then there’s a reason for this. Heating up your body aids in muscle relaxation. Endorphins are released that naturally boost your mood which alleviate anxious feelings. The heat from the water sooths tense muscles, including the neck which also can contribute to headache issues.
Depression
New Scientist suggested in a small study that hot baths in the afternoon helped alleviate depression. Raising the body temperature in the afternoon helps restore the normal circadian rhythm of temperature, which is often disturbed in people with depression. The baths also improved people’s sleep patterns... If hot baths can do this, imagine what a hot tub can do!
